Reinventing Grand Army Plaza

Data : Abril de 2008

Programa :
– Adaptar as formas de circulação às necessidades do presente ;
– Criar formas de circulação pedonal mais seguras ;

Conceito :
…everything, albeit distorted, is compressed into that one small circle. That is why a game can be played by those who are prepared to penetrate the surface…” (Escher, 1989, p.60)

Concept :
“…everything, albeit distorted, is compressed into that one small circle. That is why a game can be played by those who are prepared to penetrate the surface…” (Escher, 1989, p.60)

The proposal was a system of different surfaces and platforms that would function as a means to restore the continuity between the square and its surroundings and to allow creating new possibilities for life in urban space.

The proposal created a hierarchy based on strength and functionality of the different levels of circulation, so it was considered important to keep car traffic and pedestrian circulation as separate as possible, through subways, platforms and green corridors.

A new avenue linking the center of Prospect Park and Grand Army Plaza was proposed. The new surfaces offer different options to achieve its center and surrounding neighborhoods. The existing garden areas would be treated, and paths would be created which allow their survival and integration as part of the public space.
